Katlyn Adkins

Katlyn Adkins is a junior majoring in environmental studies. She is an officer in UNC Green (the student environmental club) and a member of UNCG’s Cross Country & Track team. In the summer of 2015, she was an intern at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, a non-profit organization focusing on ecology and ecotourism around the Outer Banks.  “It was an experience of a lifetime basically living on Hatteras Island for free for an entire summer. I lived and worked with 8 other interns from different schools with similar majors as well as different ones including Outdoor Recreation and Biology Education. Each of the interns completed a summer long project and mine was to plan and host a Beach Clean-up on Hatteras Island. Together with the other volunteers, we collected over 110lbs of trash from HWY 12 and walking a mile on the beach. I also taught art classes using plastic soda bottles to make hanging fish and painting reusable shopping bags. In my spare time I would go kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the Pamlico Sound. While living next to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, I worked a lot with the Park Rangers, and I’m interested in working for the National Park Service.”
